Part 2.People have been beating down my door for this. Okay, one person text me. But let's not quibble over trifling details.

We left Lake Hawea and journeyed to Ophir for new year's eve, with our first stop en route being Mt. Difficulty winery. It's a shame you can't take a photo of the amazing surrounds of Mt. Difficulty without a particularly unattractive shed getting in the frame, but such is life - not all sheds can be as great as the one you're about be introduced to.

Next stop was Clyde, one of my new favourite small towns in New Zealand. I was slightly concerned when halfway through my giant South Island cheese roll (honestly, were those large cubes of butter really necessary?) Alex pointed out that the damn could break at any time and the whole town would be in major trouble.

The issue of damn breakage means I could never live there without constant worrying. Which is a shame, because Clyde was home to one of the best sheds we encountered. Bear with me, but also, the colours are amazing!

I hope I didn't build it up too much.

Other highlights of Clyde included the angel on top of the war memorial and the latticework on the verandah of the Four Square.

We got to our little old cottage in Ophir in time for a cup of tea and some of chocolate slice the woman who owns the cottage had left. Ophir is on the Otago rail trail and is basically just one long street, but it has some pretty nice old buildings and seems to have had a bit of a rebirth thanks to the rail trail. The cottage we stayed in was old and so cutely decorated on the inside, a bit like an old lady lived there, but cute all the same. There were chickens in a big long coop that ran the length of the driveway, and a beautiful little garden.

After our tea and slice, we drove about 25 minutes to St Bathans to see some friends who have only very recently returned from overseas. I'd never heard of St Bathans before but it was very cool.

There we were, driving along empty country roads when suddenly we arrived in this buzzing little one road old gold mining town where the mine has turned into a lake.

Hannah's Dad and step-mother own the old constable's cottage and up behind that are the ruins of the old school. Everything is old, just the way I like it.
We had beer and chips outside the Vulcan Hotel which looked like a pretty popular new year's eve spot for the locals.
And I think that's enough for today. Stay tuned for Part 3.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-32361745070221117842013-01-19T10:34:00.002+13:002013-01-19T10:34:38.953+13:00The South of the South. Part 1.I did get better. And the South Island was really awesome.

I think I'm going to have to display the South Island in two parts, because, as per usual, I took a millionty photos. Including some pretty great photos of sheds. So:

Some definite wins in Geraldine. The woman in the shop that is home to The Giant Jersey of Geraldine informed us that her husband knitted the jersey and she sewed it together. Team effort.

One of my favourite parts of driving through South Canterbury was the wild flowers - such amazing colours. I got a bit carried away with taking photos from inside a moving vehicle.

So there we were, driving along, listening to a Canadian post-rock band (I don't know what that means except that some of their songs are a million years long and parts sound like someone forgot to turn off the amp while plugging things in and moving equipment around) when we came around a bend and there was some brilliantly blue water. I had been occaisionally looking at the map but I didn't really know where we were and Lake Tekapo took me by surprise. I think it was the one moment where I went, 'Wow. New Zealand is pretty amazing. I can see why people go on about the scenery.' So there you go, you can quote me Tourism New Zealand. It honestly looks like someone is putting a lot of blue food colouring in the water.

The little church at Lake Tekapo is pretty cute and probably has the best view in New Zealand.

The first two nights we stayed at Lake Hawea, near Wanaka. On the first night our air bed deflated, so it was two nights of sleeping on the ground. Dreamy.

I was not a big fan of Wanaka as a town. The only building I liked was this one (I went in on the Sunday and was all, 'Oh do you think we'd need to book for dinner tonight?' and the man was like, 'We're already fully booked.' Shame.):

It seemed like 90% of the other buildings in Wanaka were glass and stone rich people monstrosities. There was no sense of history and I was not a fan. But the actual Lake and surrounds were nice. We drove around the Lake a bit for a picnic in what turned out to be kind of a marsh.

Then we walked around part of the Lake (the Lake is really big) and I took some artful nature photos.

THEN, we went for a little drive up a gravel road (turns out I love gravel roads; I think it's just been a while since I've been on one) and found this gorge.

And this shed which is the first shed in the Shed Series. It's a good shed, but nowhere near as good as the best shed, which will have to wait for Part Two. This is just like the 2012 Shortland Street finale - so full of suspense.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-52867119556998909972012-12-25T23:00:00.001+13:002013-01-09T22:01:44.599+13:00A less than cherry ChristmasBecause I couldn't eat this Christmas (a cruel twist of fate for someone who loves food as much as me), I had to take in the simple pleasures of Christmas day - in between lying very still on various beds in great heat.

I did manage some jelly tonight though so it wasn't all bad. And it made me think of all the people a lot worse off than me on Christmas day and other days. I hope people in hospitals and hospices and nursing homes and just alone found something to enjoy today.
ALL OF THEM.And now, Christmas is two sleeps away. And I am in bed sick. Good times.

Because it would take far too long to properly recap on the last month, here is a collection of photos with some context.

Lots has been going on at work - first of all, Ed designed this amazing Christmas poster.

Pip moved out. It was sad. But she made us an incredible goodbye dinner featuring pulled pork, spicy coleslaw, and lemon meringue pie.

My letter to the editor was published in the North & South, which confirms my future as an angry letter writing old lady.

I went to Auckland and ate like a Queen, saw the musical Little Shop of Horrors which was a really fun time, and saw 'Who Shot Rock & Roll' at the Auckland Art Gallery.

I went to Toast Martinborough for the third year in a row, this time with Ed, Nick and Little Claire. This is a chicken and quince pie by Ruth Pretty at Ata Rangi. Sadly there was no creme brulee this year which was honestly one of the reasons I wanted to go to Toast. I think I'll have a break from it next year, it was a good day but I need a rest from it.

We stayed at my family's house in Masterton after Toast and went for a walk to Rathkeale to walk off all the food we'd eaten.

We put on a Christmas sing-along show and I went to Auckland. Again.

To help market the show the cast and a couple of others (actually just Kate the Stage Manager and I), went and sang at the Christmas markets in Frank Kitts Park. It was really cute and some old people loved it.

We had a party under the dome in the Grand Hall upstairs at 1 Kent Tce to say Bon Voyage to BATS while we temporarily relocate to the corner of Cuba and Dixon Streets for 2013. My last week at work was spent in a makeshift office upstairs with a 12 metre drill below.

I got to go to carols at Longwood again this year, it was lovely as per usual.

Then I had a roast dinner two nights in a row, at the second one we had amazing bread pudding with chocolate, pears, and sugar syrup.

On Friday night there was some South Island road trip planning and a visit to the Telecom Christmas Tree. Then yesterday a visit to Alex for her birthday where there were some beautiful flowers and a beautiful baby. He is so cute.

Now, I'm really looking forward to feeling better (please let it be soon). I was meant to be in the Wairarapa already but I felt too sick to drive over. So I'm hanging out in bed watching first the clouds and then the fog roll in and magically disappear the harbour. It hasn't really felt like Christmas much yet, I haven't decorated a tree, didn't get time to make Christmas cards, I haven't done all my Christmas shopping, and I've only listened to A Very Cherry Christmas a couple of times. But my first 10 weeks of work have been crazy and we made a Christmas show, so that probably has something to do with it.

On the 28th I'm going down South for a little drive around (although, not so little really, one day involves five hours of driving...) as I've never been south of Christchurch. I'm excited. Let's hope Boy Alex (my Mum insists I stop calling him that, 'It makes him sound like Boy George' - but I've got too many Alexs around, I need to differentiate them somehow) and I don't get too sick of each other. I plan to take lot's of photos, so stay tuned.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-32490068463002255502012-12-16T22:21:00.000+13:002012-12-16T22:21:08.074+13:00Knitting. Finally.Well, that was an unintended month long hiatus. I've mostly been working I think, and swimming, and going to Auckland, and singing along with our Christmas show that closed last night after 13 performances. And, most importantly, knitting. The knitting deserves its own post so I'll save a general update/photographic essay of the last month for next time.

The arrival of the baby for whom the Pebble vest was intended gave me a helpful push to get it finished (push, oh the comedy). So...

Voila! It was so easy to knit and I got to sew buttons onto knitting for the first time and once it was washed and blocked it looked all even and beautiful. I still love the colour and Theodore looks so cute wearing it (I haven't seen it on him in real life yet but Alex sent me a heaps cute photo).

The buttons aren't quite what I'd have chosen if there was more choice, but I was in a hurry to get it finished so that he wouldn't outgrow it before he even got it, and Knit World in town didn't have a very big selection. They're fine though, purpley, kind of shiny and almost Paua shell patterned.

But, what's made me feel like an actual knitter is the booties. I knew when I finished them a few months ago that the bind off was quite tight, and sure enough, when Cam tried to put them on Teddy's feet it didn't seem like it was going to work. So I took them home and decided to try to unpick the bind off and bind them off more loosely. Then, I had the idea to knit a couple of rows in rib, because rib is much stretchier. And it worked!

You can't really see the rib rows very clearly in this artful foliage photo, but they were tested this afternoon and are a success. It's like I know what I'm doing or something.

Yup, more photos. These were from last last Sunday when I did get to sit in the sun and do a few rows of the Pebble vest in between admiring the view from our deck.

Then I went to a rehearsal for our Christmas show which is coming along nicely, and then to Mumford & Sons at the Town Hall. It was good but by the time they came on we'd been standing for over two hours and my yam feet couldn't cope. The festoons looked beautiful though. I do love a good string of lights.

During the week I went to Safety Not Guaranteed - it felt like I hadn't been to the movies for ages, but turns out my 'ages' is actually like a week and half. I ended up quite liking it, the ending was very unexpected. I also went to a talk about la dia de los muertos at Te Papa. It made me really want to go to Mexico. And I went swimming twice this week at the Freyberg Pool - well, a mixture of swimming and aqua jogging really. I'm embracing my deep uncoolness.

On Saturday I went to a 3 year old birthday party which had a dinosaur cake and whitebait fritters. And then had THE most amazing lunch with Beth at Nam Restaurant. There's a new summer 'Wrap and Roll' lunch menu - you get fresh salad ingredients (lettuce, herbs, thinly sliced veges), different types of meats and fish, and rice paper which you quickly dip in warm water to soften and then use different combinations of ingredients to make yum rice paper rolls which you dip in various sauces.

The lovely woman who runs the restaurant talked us through all the ingredients and showed us how to make the rolls (Beth was way better at it than me).

It was so filling and THEN we got freshly made warm banana sago pudding, which I had never had before but was ridiculously good. I got jasmine tea while Beth got Drip Drip Coffee, which is a little filter contraption that sits on top of a glass quarter-filled with condensed milk. The coffee is dangerously sweet mixed with the milk and even I quite liked the taste.

So, pretty amazing.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-33499432535787035192012-11-04T11:50:00.001+13:002012-11-04T11:50:37.752+13:00More life in pictures

And there's been some walking to work and cups of tea and brunches and the usual.

Actually, on Sunday night I went to the final film of the Italian Film Festival. I had wanted to go to a couple of the films during the Festival but didn't manage to fit them in, so had to just go to whatever was on last Sunday evening. It was La Bellezza Del Somaro (A Family on the Verge), a modern adaptation of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Which, thanks to classic movie Sunday, I have actually seen.

The film wasn't as full of Italian babes as I had hoped, and wasn't quite the Italian romantic comedy I'd hoped for either. It was pretty crazy, but I enjoyed it. I thought making the daughter's boyfriend an old man in his 70s was a great modernising of the shock in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
I'm going to do some more knitting today, because that baby is going to appear any day now, before going to watch a rehearsal of The Island Bay Loners' Doomsday Christmas Sing-Along. It's a bit weird because Alex, Ed and I have written it but only Ed is in it and it's being directed by our friend Uther. It's going to be amazing though - it's a mixture of comedy and Christmas songs, so how could it not be the best thing ever?Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-10954850763715872272012-10-28T17:38:00.000+13:002012-10-28T17:38:02.218+13:00A few of me photos

I went to a play as part of the Greytown Arts Festival which was performed entirely with marionettes. At the end, the main female marionette demanded to be released from her strings - she sank down and then the puppeteers picked her up and made her walk on air out into the audience and down to the back of the room where she disappeared. That was my favourite bit.

I saw and liked this painting by New Zealand artist Bessie Christie last time I was at Auckland Art Gallery, and this time I took a photo of it. It's called 'The Art Class', dated around 1948.

I really liked the exhibition of Auckland Pasifika artists at the Gallery, and I got very frustrated by The Walters Prize works. Mainly because the blurbs giving the works some context were on the wall opposite to the entrance to the exhibition so I didn't see it and didn't understand what was going. Also, modern art can just be frustrating, I think anyway.

The end.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-40213032265921561062012-10-24T21:58:00.003+13:002012-10-24T21:58:53.014+13:00DuckgustationLast week I went to the opera, a marionette play in Greytown, and to Auckland to see Mary Poppins. But more on that another time. Maybe. Because more pressing is the dream food experience I had on Sunday evening.

I had been wanting to do a degustation for AGES. The thought of a million courses of small but perfectly formed dishes definitely sounded like my idea of a good time. However, they're often quite expensive and I didn't know who would want to spend all that money eating food with me.

Luckily, it was my flatmate Stuart's birthday and he organised a group to go to Le Canard in Thorndon for an eight course duck degustation, giving plenty of notice so that people could save their pennies. Although, it was extremely good value - only $80, plus $45 to have wine matched with four of the courses. And the extremely attractive and delightfully charming French waiter was thrown in for free.

Naturally, I photographically documented each and every course.

First we were given what seemed like a cross between red wine and sparkling wine. Usually I'm not a fan of either, but this was really good.

Then there was the Amuse-Bouche, 'A Taste of Homemade Charcuterie'. Duck mousse and duck terrine. Some people ate theirs off the spoon but I had mine on bread.

Then 'Truffled [is 'to truffle' actually a verb? I'm not convinced] Scrambled Duck Egg and Air Dried Duck Breast'. This was one of my favourites. Although this chef obviously doesn't subscribe to the 'you should be able to eat everything on the plate' school of thought. The long thin thing leaning on the egg was a delicious, delicious fancy sliver of toasted sandwich with strips of duck in it.

'Duck Gizzard and Fresh Goat Cheese, Honey and Raspberry Vinegar Dressing'. I didn't know what gizzard was, someone thought it was the 'waste meat', someone else thought it was from in the 'neck area'. I just looked it up and found out it's part of the digestive tract. In some situations I think ignorance is bliss because it tasted really good. Although I'd still have eaten it if I'd known what it was, I might just have been a bit more wary. The cheese was a highlight, it had walnuts in it and was very creamy.

This was the 'Duck Buillon with Foie Gras and Mushrooms'. The bowl came out without the buillon (I asked, it means 'broth'), which was poured from a teapot into the bowl once it had been set on the table. I do realise how foie gras is made and it does cause me some conflict. Le Canard has actually been the subject of some protests over it, but I've had it once before (in Paris) and it's so good. Maybe I am a terrible person. Emma had hers without the foie gras and said the broth and creamy stuff was still delicious.

We then had a 'Walnut Wine Granite' which I guess was a palate cleanser. It was amazing how strong the walnut taste was. By this point I was in a kind of disbelieving joyful stupor that we'd already had so many amazing things, and that there were still three more courses to come. It was a great feeling. The excellently matched wine probably helped.

This was the 'Duck Leg Confit Croquette with Cepes Sauce, Peas Mousseline'. I loved mushy peas when I had them in England and I loved the fancier version - pea mousseline.

This was definitely one of my favourites. 'Roasted Duck Breast with Blueberry Sauce'. It wasn't as delicate as some of the other courses, but it was cooked perfectly.

I love dessert. And I really love creme brulee. So this was another favourite (I've said lots of things were favourites, so really, I think I loved them all a lot). I commented that the profiterole looked like an elephant. The French waiter (on whom I had developed quite a crush as I got more intoxicated) clarified that it was supposed to be a swan. Then when he brought out my hot chocolate, which was accompanied by a little biscuit, he said, 'I have a terrible joke - that is not an elephant' (indicating the biscuit). I was briefly smitten.

And then it was over. Almost four hours after it began. If only every Sunday night meal was like that.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-3724159863126994822012-10-16T22:45:00.000+13:002012-10-16T22:45:37.239+13:00Sickeningly hip

I'm quite in love with the Hipstamatic and Instagram apps on my new phone. I know, it's embarrassing. I'm becoming more of a stereotype every day. It's just that they automatically make everything seem more interesting/are more forgiving than normal photos.

I started my new job this week, hence the first day flowers. I've got a new closest cafe (given I'm now down the other end of town) where I can't help but read the horoscope stuck on the coffee machine each day. I got last day flowers from my old job, which were very nice.

In between seeing the third year solos at Toi and the first STAB show at BATS and the opera tonight (which I quite liked, although it is weird hearing it sung in English, they seem to randomly repeat sentences and words, sometimes multiple times, which you don't notice so much when it's in a foreign language), I went bridesmaid dress shopping with my friend Hayley who I'm being a bridesmaid for next year (I always said I'd sing a particular song at her wedding so I'd better get practising), had Baby Knitters Club and babysat (which is where the second photo is from).

Thanks to BKC and babysitting, I have finally made some more progress on the Pebble vest. I'm really liking knitting it, it's very straightforward so far. I don't want to jinx it but I feel like it just might be ready before the baby is.

This weekend I'm going to Mary Poppins the musical in Auckland. I am very excited.

Anita has finished the baby jersey she has been knitting. It's knit in 4ply so it wasn't exactly a quick knit. I am hopeless. If I spent less time having dinner at Arthur's Kitchen on Saturday night (they have 'Dunedin cheese rolls' as a starter choice - so good), brunch at the Chocolate Fish Cafe at Shelly Bay on Sunday morning (one of the group I was with described it as a 'creche with a coffee machine' which was pretty apt, there were SO many small children, but they were having a great time in the big outside area fighting over the trikes and balance bikes, one little boy pulled down his pants and started weeing right in the middle of all the other kids, until his Dad saw him and ran in and swooped him up, then his Mum came over with a jug of water to wash the concrete. None of the other kids seemed to notice or care, they just altered the course of their biking slightly), or swanning out to Makara for the afternoon on Sunday then I'd have more knitting to show for myself.

I'd never been to Makara before though, so I was glad to go out there. We climbed up a bit of a hill and the view was pretty great. Mana and Kapiti Islands to the north (second picture), and the South Island to the south (go figure).Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-39135538795761225802012-10-01T22:14:00.000+13:002012-10-01T22:14:02.394+13:00Up the Garden Path (but not really)

The path to my house is covered with pink flowers, which is very picturesque but also very slippery when it has been raining.

We had Baby Knitters Club last Wednesday. I'm making slow progress on the Pebble Vest. I feel like the finished product is going to be tiny given it's all knit as one piece, so I'd better hurry up.

Last week I went to Bill Bailey, The Keepers and Flowers From My Mother's Garden. I'm going to try to go to all the BATS shows from now on given my new job, so I might have to stop listing them or it will get boring. I also went to La Boca Loca in Mirarmar and it was yum. I'd wanted to go for a while because people had said it was good and I was not disappointed. I especially appreciated the Frida shrine in the toilet. Although, I wonder how she'd feel about her shrine being in the toilet.

I feel like I haven't been to the movies in ages, but that's not actually true. The other week I went to The Sapphires. It was bit too cheesy for my liking. The dialogue felt pretty stale. But the music was fun.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-74146424498476539832012-09-24T23:54:00.000+12:002012-09-24T23:54:33.896+12:00Tinui

This time to a 'cottage' in Tinui, which isn't very far away from the beach I stayed at the weekend before. The 'cottage' wasn't really a cottage, but a big old three bedroom house, beautifully restored with an impressively hot fire, an outdoor spa pool (which was amazing to sit in and look at the stars on a frosty night), and a 'walk' to the site of the first ever ANZAC ceremony.

We got a little off track on the walk, so instead of an hour, it took us about three hours of walking through mud, and climbing a very steep track. The view was worth it though.

We also went to Castlepoint (a different beach from the one I was at the weekend before) and walked up to the lighthouse and around the lagoon and tried to slide down the big sand dunes. The weather was very nice.

Now I have to endure the last three weeks of life as a policy analyst, before I start my new job at BATS. Exciting!

Also, I have made no progress on the Pebble vest, but the stitch markers I ordered from Holland Road Yarn Company arrived so I can take off the bits of different coloured wool I tied on and be all proper at Baby Knitters Club on Wednesday.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-41163033806102198722012-09-17T19:44:00.000+12:002012-09-17T22:10:53.081+12:00Take me to the beach

On the weekend I went to the beach. It was very, very, very nice.

Amongst going for a long walk, trying to form a biking gang of two adults to rival the biking gang of three small children we saw riding around, eating fish and chips, and falling asleep while watching March of the Penguins, I made progress on my Pebble Vest but failed to take a photo of it. It's pretty boring still. It's just 13 rows of 80 stitches with some stitch markers.

I decided I really, really like Norfolk Pines with their little stars at the top and admired them a lot.

I also made a still life with some flowers I stole from the side of the road, a shell I stole from the beach, and an eggshell blue tea tray and a Crown Lynn cup I wanted to steal from the house we stayed in. I made that coffee in the cup. In one of those stovetop percolators. I don't drink coffee, but I love those contraptions.

Also, I didn't set out to make a still life, just so you know. I put some flowers in a gravy boat on the tray and then put the shell next to it to look pretty and then decided I needed to take a photo and call it a 'still life' like a pretentious loser.

Also, also, it really annoyed me how March of the Penguins was all, 'Why do the penguins march? Because love.' And, 'Now the family get to spend some quality time together before departing, never to see each other again.' Stop projecting human emotions and concepts onto penguins. They don't do it for love. They do it for reproduction.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-17661735812275296792012-09-13T23:08:00.002+12:002012-09-13T23:08:47.881+12:00Bike helmets and poppies

Just when you thought this blog had turned into a floral tribute (and, let's be honest, it pretty much has - this post will not be without flowers), I actually make something. Granted it was only a card, but I was inordinately proud of it because I am terrible at drawing and I drew something that actually resembled the object it was supposed to.

It was a card for Alex and Cam, who had the best non-baby shower baby shower on Sunday.

There were so many cute and comedy presents and nice people (the booties and jersey above were knitted by Aileen and I was really jealous). It was at a 50s-style diner and the meals were HUGE. Then Alex and Cam and Kitty and I went home and watched Burlesque. I have now seen it three times and I'm not quite sure why.

Last night I cast on and knit six rows of my latest Baby Knitters Club project while babysitting a very cute almost three year old. I am knitting the Pebble Vest which I have seen a lot on a blog I read. It's knit across as one piece, which mean casting on 80 stitches. That is one long row.

And in floral news, the very nice florist at Bunches included some poppies in my weekly $10 bunch of flowers for my desk. So far only one has opened and it has been amazing to watch. I wish I'd had a time lapse camera taking photos of it.

How does it know to do what it does even when it's been cut off from its roots? It's actually incredible. I hope the other three buds open.

The Botanic Garden is actually making me later and later for work each morning. I'm usually already running late when I walk through, but now I'm all, 'Oh but look at that magnolia tree, I need to take a photo! Those daffodils have doubled since yesterday, I need to take a photo! Freesias in a little clump amongst purple-y blue flowers, photo! Tulips, photo! Poppies, photo!'

The tulips are amazing though. One morning there were a couple, the next morning quite a few more, and then yesterday as I drove past I saw there were HEAPS. Walking to work this week is going to be great. Unless this crazy wind ruined them all.

This week I saw a play I did not enjoy. But nothing else. I decided what I'm going to knit next for Baby Knitters Club. But I haven't actually started it.

Baby Knitters Club seems to be on a slight hiatus at the moment. However, Kate got busy in her own time and made these amazing bibs. They're like kerchiefs - they're square with a pointed bottom - and she put domes on them like a grown-up. Amazing! [I wrote 'put domes on them like a grown-up' while half-asleep last night before I gave up on finishing this post; what does it even mean? I think it means that domes seem like a hard-out thing and that only a grown-up, accomplished sewer could put them on something. Yeah, that's what it means.]

Here are two photos I took while passing through Carterton last time I was in the Wairarapa.

I think they'd need to add 'knitting' or 'sitting around drinking cups of tea, eating, and talking' to make the Club appeal to me. Neither of those activities seem crazy for a Senior Citizens' Club.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-76158356970838638872012-09-02T22:36:00.001+12:002012-09-02T22:36:13.612+12:00A mundane novella

Last Sunday I took part in Corner Diary at BATS, which was basically a group of us reading things we had written when we were younger and were, to varying degrees, ashamed of. I read from the diary I wrote when I was eight years old, and the diary I wrote when I was ten. I had the best time and I wasn't embarrassed by the younger me at all - I'm glad I was so precocious and self-absorbed and strange, it has given me the best comedy material possible. Anyway, a lot of my diary entries from when I was ten begin with 'Sorry I haven't written for so long' or 'I can't believe it's been three days/three weeks/three months since I last wrote'. Nothing changes.

That photo above was taken on my way to work one morning just over a week ago. We'd had a lot of rain and one of the walls that the footpath on Glenmore Street runs alongside had even more moss on it than usual; I didn't touch it but it looked much thicker and bouncier (I'm sure moss doesn't bounce, but whatever). And it had little succulent flowers growing out of it. I thought they were pretty cool.

In the last few weeks I have been doing the usual - eating, working, going to movies and shows, writing a Christmas show with Alex and Ed, and various other things. Have I written about the orchestra? I don't think so.

I went to the orchestra one Friday night in August. I asked for two tickets for my birthday because I hadn't been since I was much younger and I had pretty much forgotten what it was like. It was the NZSO and the concert was called Cathedral of Sound, with 'one of the most exciting and ground breaking conductors of our time' Simone Young conducting Mozart's Symphony No. 36 Linz and Bruckner's Symphony No. 5. This really means nothing to me, all I know is I really enjoyed it and I couldn't believe over two hours had passed when we walked out. Simone Young was very animated in her conducting, she pretty much conducted with her whole body so it was really interesting to watch. Which was lucky because we were right near the front so could only see the front part of the string section. The person I went with wore a bow tie. Which was pretty great.

Here are some pictures of food I have eaten in the past few weeks:

The main of the Wellington On A Plate set menu at Le Metropolitain, followed by dessert off the menu. Creme brulee for me and warm chocolate pudding with sour cherries for Kelly.

Tacos from QBT on the waterfront at lunchtime on Friday. A bit of a wait, but so worth it.

Scones with jam and cream (not pictured, obviously) at Martha's Pantry. Two days in a row. As well as the daffodils in that photo, there are blossoms and blooms and bulbs everywhere in the Botanic Garden at the moment. It looks and smells pretty amazing every morning when I walk through it.

Churros and chocolate sauce for dessert at El Matador last night. I drank the last of the sauce out of the cup when I'd finished the churros. So good. Kelly got pancakes filled with caramel, which looked quite crepe-ish and tasted yum.

As for movies and theatre, I went to West End Girls at Circa, which was as expected (the ending was particularly cringe-inducing). I went to Tiny Spectacle / Shitty Lyricism at BATS which was painfully hip. I went to Jerichow at the Film Society (anyone could go along for a donation), a somewhat bleak and sometimes ridiculous, but enjoyable enough German film. I went to One Day Moko at BATS which was beautiful and made me a bit emotional. I saw it in its first incarnation as a Toi Whakaari solo and since then Tim has developed it into an hour long show. He is very very clever and such a strong performer. It makes you think a bit differently about homelessness and people you see regularly on the street, but most importantly it just makes you think about those things and has some very funny moments. Rave over. I went to Moonrise Kingdom last night which was cute and funny and I loved the music (by composer Benjamin Britten).

That's enough.

Oh but I listened to the most beautiful and sad 'This American Life' podcast this week. 'Our Friend David', following the death of regular contributor David Rakoff, whose voice I love. David's life is explored through bits from stories he'd told on the show and it was just so funny and lovely. I love that show.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-49071209039226355202012-08-21T23:38:00.002+12:002012-08-21T23:38:47.103+12:00Pairing Up

I finally finished my first pair of booties! Now if Alex's baby has two feet, there will be a bootie for each one. These particular booties are actually really easy to make, once you figure out the weirdly confusing abbreviation that looks like a yarn forward (aka a yarn over) but actually means 'bring the yarn to the front between the needles'.

Anita finished a hat, which I have taken a really poor photo of. Sorry Anita. It's really cute though and that striping is impressive.

Now Anita has started a jersey (she is so winning and it annoys me), and I think I am going to start a sleeveless vest-type thing. I need to do some research. Slowly but surely we are going to knit this baby a wardrobe. It may contain only one full set of clothes, but babies can't talk so he won't be able to complain.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-903942388388020132012-08-19T23:26:00.000+12:002012-08-19T23:26:22.389+12:00BREAKING NEWS

A REAL child actually wore something I made! On her first ever birthday! It was really cute.

At the party there was jelly - not thirty cups of it, but rainbow jelly which makes it even more impressive.

For her birthday Isla got an amazing teepee. I want one.

I think someone else does too - and given who spent the most time in the teepee today, I think we can tell who it was really for. Turns out little sisters having birthdays are actually quite handy.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-84027945588911919682012-08-13T22:43:00.000+12:002012-08-13T22:43:58.575+12:00Movie, film, movie, film, movie, movie, movie, filmOh dear. It's been weeks. And all I have to show for it is films.

This time last year I was in London. I just looked through one day's worth of photos and found this photo from a school in Notting Hill. I took so many photos and I haven't really looked at them since. I'm still glad I took them though. It's so strange, it feels like such a long time ago.

Anyway, what have I been doing for the past few weeks? Basically, going to the movies. Last year I was away for the NZ International Film Festival, so I more than made up for it this year. I saw ten films altogether:

Wish You Were Here - Australian babes. Holiday in Cambodia goes very wrong.
How To Meet Girls From A Distance - Dean and Richard (and a whole lot of other hard working people) won the Make My Movie competition and got $100,000 to make a feature film. They didn't have a lot of time. It is very funny and well made. All the harbour and Mt Vic scenes made my heart swell for Wellington. It helped that it was a beautiful Sunday the day of the first ever screening, so we came outside and it was like we lived in that amazing sunny city of the movie.
The Imposter - A literally unbelievable documentary. In a very good way.
Tabu - I don't understand why the first part set in the present day had to be so long. I liked the scenery of the part set in what must have been the 1950s in Africa. The love story wasn't the grand romance I thought it was going to be.
Your Sister's Sister - So much better than your 'average' American romantic comedy. Not perfect. I really liked Rosemarie DeWitt. And the main guy.
Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey - A documentary about the pretty amazing Bernadette Devlin who became an MP in Ireland in 1969 at 21 and has spent her life campaigning for social justice. Because I'm nosey I wish it revealed more about her personal life, as it was purely focussed on her upbringing and political life.
Last Days Here - Don't become a junkie. Even if your early heavy metal career never amounted to much. You will live in your parents sub-basement and think larvae are living in your skin. Pretty depressing. Even though it has a 'happy' ending.
How Far is Heaven - Hiruharama is beautiful and so is this documentary. The Sisters of Compassion teach a pretty good lesson about compassion and patience. The children who live in the settlement with their families have such a different upbringing from the one I had yet we live in the same country. I hope lots of New Zealanders watch this documentary. Especially politicians.
Searching for Sugar Man - By far my favourite film of the ten I saw. The less you know about it, the better. Holy Motors - One of the strangest films I have ever seen. But I liked it. I was glad it had a sense of humour, because otherwise it would have been very, very wanky.

If anything, this festival reaffirmed my love of documentaries. There are a couple I wanted to see that I didn't get to, so hopefully they come back or I can find them on DVD.

Wellington On A Plate has started. On Saturday night I had the $35 set dinner menu at The Hop Garden. We were lucky to get in actually, being the first night of WOAP everywhere that was participating seemed really busy. The food was very, very good. I am excited to try some other new places and maybe finally achieve my degustation dream...

In floral news, here are two photos I took over the last two weeks. A beautiful big magnolia tree on my way to work, and the my new tradition of weekly flowers at work.

Fact for the future: Irises are beautiful but they don't last long in an air conditioned office.

I'll be back in less than two weeks. I promise.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-18621361595607481612012-07-24T23:14:00.004+12:002012-07-24T23:19:14.587+12:00Too tired to think of a titleLast week Kelly took me to Cafe Breton for lunch. I didn't know it existed and I love it! I do know that acute accents exist and that there should be one on the 'e' of 'cafe' but I can't make it work on here.

I have to say though, I bought some macarons to take back to work and they weren't amazing. They tasted like an oven. I have very high standards though, because of my favourite macarons in Auckland. Anyway, apart from the macarons, which I'm willing to give a second chance, it was so cute and my omelette was giant and yum. And the French guy there is quite a babe.

My other near-my-new-work discovery is a florist a few doors down that has amazing $10 bunches of flowers. I really hate the blank walls of depression that are office cubicle dividers, and I'm slowly covering my new ones with decorative items (I refuse to put 'useful' things like organisation charts and phone lists on them, that's what folders are for), but I can't go too crazy too quickly and install a whole exhibition, so I've bought flowers twice now to help fill the gaps. They smell amazing.

In movie news, the other weekend I watched a Danish film. It was called A Royal Affair, and I only kind of skim-read the synopsis on the Penthouse Cinema website when Kelly asked if I wanted to join her and some others for dinner and the movie, so I thought it would be some kind of bodice ripping costume drama. And who doesn't need a bit of that sometimes? Turns out, it's a pretty intense two hour and seventeen minute long historical drama about the Danish royal family in the 18th century. I learned a lot though, like that vaccination in some form had been invented as early the 18th century and that Danish is a very complicated sounding language.

Completely different, was Sunday's classic movie. The Commitments.

I think the idea to watch it came about because Cam was talking about the song 'Mustang Sally' last classic movie Sunday. Anyway, I had seen bits of it before because my Mum loved it, but I don't remember ever having seen it all the way through. While the story is pretty much that of your run-of-the-mill struggling group from unlikely origins (often sports teams but in this case a band), I liked that they didn't actually achieve fame or anything in the end. It felt much more realistic. For some reason, I always thought it was based on a true story. I just learned that it isn't.

Anyway, there are heaps of babes in the film and I decided Jimmy Rabbitte could be my Irish husband. The poverty and hopelessness of Dublin in some parts of the film were pretty stark. In one scene, there are kids just throwing bricks at a wall in an alleyway for what seems like no reason, they just have nothing else to do.
Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-63356250928277092142012-07-21T12:25:00.001+12:002012-07-21T12:25:20.422+12:00Nature

I don't know why I haven't written anything in a while, it feels like both nothing and lots has been happening. I started a new job, I ripped my second half-done bootie out because I made the same mistake as the first time I tried to knit the first bootie, I stayed home most of last weekend in my pyjamas and re-watched five episodes of Girls. It's a tough life. Oh, but also the last two times I posted there was weird white background highlighting on some of the sentences and it made me angry and I couldn't fix it.

Anyway, I can't not record the event that was DJ Plays the Hits. Three weekends ago Ed and I had a joint birthday party at his house. There were giant red balloon columns. We went to the Salvation Army and bought hit records, such as Rod Stewart's 'Blondes Have More Fun' and one with Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb dressed entirely in white and embracing on the cover, to make mobile-like hanging record decorations and artfully place the covers up the stairway. There was a disco ball. I made 30 cups of jelly and no one could understand why the jelly wasn't alcoholic.

Heaps of people dressed up and there were some amazing costumes. I wore Vogel's toast on my head.
On Sunday just been, we had classic movie Sunday for the first time in a while. I think. Yes. It was the first time since Annie. Anyway, we watched Top Gun in recognition of Tom Cruise's latest divorce. It was pretty hilarious. How many times can the song Danger Zone be played in one film? Many, many times. Why was Tom Cruise ever considered a heart throb? I have no idea. Why does the blue light in the scene in which he and the instructor woman get together make it look like they are inside an aquarium? Again, no idea. I found the flying scenes really stressful. My favourite character was Goose. He wasn't interested in wearing jeans when it was extremely hot and getting sunburnt because he was shirtless while playing an intense game of beach volleyball. He was wearing flowery shorts and an 80s t-shirt. And he played the piano and his wife was a really cute Meg Ryan wearing a great dress. And that's the sum total of my critical analysis.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-47719278400793896322012-07-02T22:47:00.000+12:002012-07-02T22:58:26.324+12:00Ancient HistoryWhat have I been doing? I don't even know. But here are some photos from last weekend. I think. It seems like a long time ago already. I was down in Canterbury visiting my Mum.
I finally completed my great Christmas 2011 lavender scheme, by taking the bunch of dried lavender out of the hot water cupboard, stripping the little bits off it, admiring my harvest, and cutting up an old pillowcase to sew two little lavender pillows.
On Saturday night my Mum, step-sister, and I went to a movie at the Waikari hall. The old screen is still there from many many years ago when movies used to be played and someone has set a projector up in the old projector booth. The chairs weren't exactly luxurious but it was a cute community time. The movie was The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which I had seen before but I knew my Mum would like.Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3445192844326359570.post-59578441869479511742012-06-21T22:32:00.001+12:002012-06-21T22:41:48.401+12:00Everything. It's been a week since my birthday eve. Where does the time

Those are some biscuits I made to take to work on my birthday.
There's a weird semi-tradition at my current workplace in which people bring
baking on their birthday. Which doesn't really make sense, but it meant I got
to eat Nigella's
extreme chocolate chip biscuits with the five minute quiz, so I wasn't
complaining.
I had a really great birthday that included being taken out
three times for cups of tea, gifts of novelty socks, necklaces (including a
necklace with a tiny working harmonica and a necklace that looks like bunting),
and home made fruit leather, pizza with lots of cool people, wine, and me
getting angrily adamant about how long someone has to have their full license
for before they can teach a learner driver. Turns out I was wrong. It is only
two years. Fine.

Alex gave me these tulips which have been the gift that just
keeps on giving. They started out all closed and lovely and over the past week,
encouraged by the gentle humming of the fridge no doubt, they have opened up
and become even lovelier.
On Saturday the weather was yuck but that was more than okay
because a collection of people came to my house and played boardgames. Then I
proof-read a whole lot of short essays for a non-fiction book my old manager is
publishing. I learned a lot about early New Zealand tourism ephemera (namely
posters).

Then on Sunday we had classic movie Sunday and I got to
choose because it was my birthday and I chose Annie because
I didn't think I'd ever seen it before and if I had I couldn't remember any of
it and it's very important that I see a seminal redheaded child movie.
Oh Annie, you hilarious but too long musical
movie. Daddy Warbucks is both creepy and the best billionaire adoptive father
ever. Miss Hannigan is probably me in 20 years time, bathing in gin. There are
some strange characters like Punjab, and I was pretty surprised by the
sometimes quite intense sexual innuendo in a children's movie.

Monday night saw my flatmate Emma and I tucked up in her bed
watching the season finale of Girls. I don't know if I've
mentioned Girls on here before, but the season finale was
amazing and I now love Girls unequivocally. I really wasn't
sure for a while, I liked the first episode, I wasn't that thrilled by some
other episodes, I was disappointed we didn't see more of my favourite character
(Shoshana), I have read a lot of the criticisms (and the hype) of the show and
I agree with some of them, but overall I think it's pretty impressive and I am
looking forward to season two.

Tuesday night I saw All My Sons
at Circa and was pleasantly surprised. I had low expectations, but
the cast was impressive and the script was very good (when considered in terms
of the tradition that it comes from). I got a fright at the end which was
probably very naive of me, and it made me think about the wider
effects of war - beyond soldiers dying and the effect that has on their
families.

Last night I went to Flight of the Conchords at the Michael
Fowler Centre. The songs were great, they played lots of classics and a few new
ones. There were some excellent surprised (especially during 'Bowie's In
Space'), and Arj Barker's opening comedy set was pretty funny. I did feel,
though, like Bret wasn't that enthused about being there. He seemed to want to
just get it over and done with. Someone at work went last night as well and she
said, 'Oh I didn't think that, I thought that was just him, or his schtick.'
But I saw them a few years ago in Masterton and I definitely think they were
more generous with their between-song banter and general attitude. I'm glad I
went though, it was so good hearing some old favourites,
especially 'A Hilarious Misunderstanding' which isn't on either
of the albums but is very good.

And now I'm going to Christchurch for the weekend. I want to
take my knitting but I only have carry-on and I'm scared they'll take it off me
and it'll be gone forever. It's a hard knock life, for me.
Cheriehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06846326414245951601noreply@blogger.com0
